Huge

First, I will admit that I am sensitive about this subject being an overweight person myself, but television shows are notorious for making fun of overweight people and being less than sensitive to the issues we face. Case in point: "More to Love," Fox's version of the Batchelor. Don't even get me started on that show. Notice it only lasted one season. And how many times has there been a fat character in a movie or TV show who was the brunt of all the jokes? I've never understood why being fat is funny. Why is it funny when a fat person falls down? Actually, why is it funny when a skinny person falls down? Most of the nation is overweight...most of us don't actually look like the malnourished, heroin-chic actors that usually grace the screen. So why aren't there more people like the rest of us on TV? And when they do put normal people on TV, it's either The Biggest Loser (which is a great show, don't get me wrong) or something like "More to Love" or "Dance Your Ass Off."

Apparently ABC Family is debuting a new series tonight called "Huge" about teens at a Fat Camp. This is either the worst idea ever or the best. I hate the name, but apparently it's based on a book by the same name and it promises to be poignant, compelling, touching, blah, blah, blah....I will be setting my DVR for this show and will blog my thoughts about it afterwards.

When I first heard about the Lifetime show "Drop Dead Diva," I was skeptical. The premise of that show is a skinny blond model dies and her soul accidentally ends up in the body of a plus-sized (or normal-sized, if you ask me) lawyer with brown hair. People tell me that I look like the main character, Jane. I take this as a very big compliment because I think she's gorgeous. They've actually managed to treat the issues with grace and some humor, without poking fun at overweight people, all the while showing that Jane actually lives a normal life. She's not a freak of nature like most overweight people are portrayed on TV.  I really like "Diva," so maybe "Huge" will surprise me. I hope it does. And I hope it's the kind of show that will give a voice to the millions of teens - and 38 year olds like me - who struggle with being overweight. It's about a lot more than just being lazy and fat. Trust me.

Glee belongs to me!

I can't help it, I love Glee. The show is the best guilty pleasure ever! Every week I watch, sing along, and marvel at the witty dialogue. My sister doesn't get it. But she also doesn't like musicals. I think there might be something wrong with that kid. :) She also makes fun of my iPod and tells me I have the songlist of a gay man. Well, gay men have good taste, this we know, right? Can I get an Amen?!?

I currently have a bad case of bronchitis, so I couldn’t sing along to the Madonna Glee episode this week, not that I didn’t try! My poor neighbors and my poor cat! My entire body hurts from the coughing spells the laughter caused. I'm guessing in this case, laughter may not have been the best medicine because my throat kinda hurts worse now. Uh oh.

I told my sister tonight that I wanted to join an adult show choir. She was speechless. Maybe instead I just need to go write for Glee. If only I could be this wonderful...here are a few of the lines from tonight’s show and the reasons why I love it so much:
  • “Would you please stop talking? You're grossing out my baby!"
  • “Oh hey William. I thought I smelled cookies wafting from the ovens of the little elves who live in your hair.”
  • “When I pulled my hamstring, I went to a misogynist.”
  • “You don't deserve the power of Madonna."
  • “Madonna belongs to me and I will not be copied. It's in my contract.”
  • “You can have your Barbras and your Chers and your Christinas...”
  • “By the way, how's the Florence Henderson look working for you?”
  • “Oh hey there, Whoopie, Don Knotts.”

I heart flash mobs

I may be slow, but I'm just now learning to appreciate the beauty of the flash mob. What is a flash mob, you ask? You've probably seen the You Tube videos -- it's where large groups of people in public places like train stations or Times Square suddenly burst out into dance and a song is played over the PA system. I think the first video I saw was The Sound of Music. Anyway, I never knew what these little performances were called until very recently, so I wanted to share my favorite with you: it's a scene from one of my favorite shows, Weeds. Ok, I know this one was choreographed professionally, but it's still my fave. :)

More to Love

This was totally my idea, just like the Soap Network, rear windshield wipers and the iPhone! Fox has announced plans to cast a "plus-sized" reality dating show. This show has the potential to be really, really bad and be offensive to those of us that fall into the plus-sized category. I really hope that it doesn't -- I hope that it shows that we have the same issues, along with some issues that the "skinny minnies" don't have. One day I will start sharing my tales of plus-sized dating -- I keep saying I need to write a book about it. Some stories will make you laugh, some will make you cry. In the meantime, I'll continue dating and collecting material...and maybe I'll just apply to be on this new show, just for grins. I do have "more to love," after all. :)

Music coming back to MTV

MTV is bringing (some) music back! Interesting since music is the concept the station was founded on more than 20 years ago. Not that I'll be watching between 3-9 a.m., but I am happy that artists will once again have a forum on TV, not just the Internet, for their videos. Good call, MTV.

body suit

I saw this on The Today Show this morning while I was about to leave for work. Yeah, I pretty much hate anyone who can pull off a body suit...especially while dancing! I'm guessing Beyonce won't be pigging out on turkey & dressing like I will this Thanksgiving.

I almost took down the new Dancing With the Stars champ!

In August 2005, my friend Jennifer & I flew to Vegas for a week long vacation. (Way too long for Vegas, but that’s another story.) I was completely obsessed with the TV show Rockstar INXS at the time & got the hair-brained idea that we should drive to LA and wait in line and be in the audience at one of the live tapings. So that’s what we did!

Our friends Kristen and Brian drove up from San Diego to meet us – they’re a cute young couple so I swear that’s how we ended up on the floor of the studio. They were shuffled to the stage, but me and Jennifer ended up a little farther back, just in front of the little platform where all the contestants sat while waiting to perform. It was pretty fun and of course interesting to watch the process of making a “reality” show. During one of the breaks, I was hot, so I lifted my hair off my shoulders. When I brought my arms down, my elbow smashed into someone – I was horrified when I turned to see that it was the show’s host, Brooke Burke! She was walking through the aisle to get set up for her next shot when Bam! My big ol’ arm crashes into her! She’s a tiny little thing, even for a Hollywood type, so it startled her and even stopped her in her tracks for a second. I apologized profusely, but she just smiled and kept walking.

Last night Brooke was crowned the Dancing With the Stars winner. Just think – I almost took out the DWTS champ three years ago! Leave it to me.

Here’s footage of Brooke introducing my favorite contestant from Rockstar INXS, Jordis Unga: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVnTfZFP4yU.

Embrace the crazy!

Whenever I see Jeffrey Dean Morgan on TV or in a movie, my knees literally go weak. He is a hunka hunka burning love, the bee’s knees and all that and a bag of chips! I mean it, he is Hottie McHot Hot! He may soon take over John Cusack’s lead to one day be my husband. If you don’t know who JDM is, he played Denny on Gray’s Anatomy, played husband to Mary Louise Parker on Weeds & played an uber-sexy, backside-showing Irish man in the movie “P.S. I Love You.” Sexy, sexy, sexy.

Anyway, Morgan’s character Denny has returned on Gray’s Anatomy for the last few episodes even though he’s dead. He appears to his former fiancĂ©, Izzy, as a ghost. Izzy is very disturbed by this and thinks she is losing her mind. Although she did spend an evening in bed with her late fiancĂ©’s ghost on the last episode, she has now decided to ignore Denny and pretend he’s not there.

Well I say if crazy is making out with a ghost who looks like Denny/Jeffrey Dean Morgan, GO FOR IT! If he appears to me, I am just going to embrace the crazy! Who cares what the world thinks, I’ll be making out with Mr. Hotpants!

PS – I have much respect for Mr. Morgan and do not just idolize his body. I like his brains just fine too.

a perfect pedicure

So I was doing laundry tonight and the TV was on in the living room, but I wasn't really paying attention to it. Then I hear the announcer say something like, "a perfect pedicure in just minutes!" So I turned my attention to the TV immediately. I'm in desperate need of a pedicure, after all. My excitement was immediately squelched, however, when I realized it was actually an infomercial for this product:

Ugh.
